Above is an initial rough shot of the Instance Generator
Lattice™ which will serve as the opening establishing shot
for the pilot webisode. The Autiton™ instances are generated
from the central hex clusters and walk outward along the
corridors in assembly line fashion.
Using HD Instance in LightWave 3D Layout this lattice
structure is composed of 5,600 interconnected hex clusters.
There
are
30 animated
Autitons in each corridor, with six corridors in each cluster
for 180 Autitons per cluster and just over one million
animated Autitons for the entire lattice.

Here’s a test render of the
Instance Generator Lattice without any fog so that
you can see just how vast the lattice
is. |

Here’s an early test render of the Instance Generator
Lattice with the fog effect used to fade out the
portions of the lattice that recede into the distance.
As the camera flys through the lattice more and more
of it will be seen.

I started designing/modeling the Instance
Generator Lattice directly in modo 3.0.2 The first
few versions of the model consisted of a rough collection
of geometric shapes as seen here at left.
|
 |
I then started to knit components together into
more organic shapes using subdivision surfaces.
|
 |
I continued to refine the model,
drawing additional details out of existing polygons
along the shapes.
|
 |
The entire Instance Generator Lattice structure
is composed entirely of a single modeled corridor
spoke. This is then radial arrayed six times to create
a single hex cluster. The hex cluster is then instanced
thousands of times using HD Instace. This way I can
leverage a relatively simple model into a vast scene
of enormous scale.

I started with a very rough concept
sketch in Corel Painter (below) and then moved right
into modo to continue the design process directly
in 3D
where I can experiment with the shapes and structure.
I’m aiming for a look that’s sort of a mixture
of a neural network, a 3D molecular carbon model,
and
a space station.
