The award-winning
3D animated short film, BlastOff!™, was inspired
by the real BlastOff! Bed™, the custom designed
space shuttle bed that was featured on HGTV’s
Look What I Did! I
designed and built the BlastOff! Bed for my son MJ when
he was three years
old and
ready to graduate from
his
crib
to
a “big
boy” bed. Rather than simply buying an ordinary children’s
bed, I wanted to create something unique that would foster
his budding imagination, so I designed the BlastOff!
Bed. Not only is this bed a real blast for MJ but it’s
also quite functional as well. The wings serve as integrated
night
stands and/or seats, while the
nose
cone
is composed of dual toy shelves and/or convenient play
tables. Toy bins may be stored underneath for out of sight toy storage.
The
footboard sports a fun steering wheel and control panel to pilot
space adventures while the lighted engine nozzles behind the
headboard serve
as an integrated night light for when the ship’s pilot is finally
tuckered out and needs some shut-eye on those long range nightly
star treks. Now you can build this custom designed kid's rocket ship bed for your star explorer.
Note: High res. versions of the images & videos
are available on the BlastOff! Special Edition DVD.
Now that NASA’s 30-year space shuttle program is in the
history books, what better way to pass on the legacy of this inspiring
achievement to a future generation of space explorers than building
them their very own space shuttle inspired BlastOff! Bed?
I remember as a senior in high school, slipping out between classes,
to watch the launch of STS-1: Columbia’s first orbital flight.
Over the 30 year history I often made a point to watch launches
and landings when possible and I remember watching both Challenger
and Columbia’s final flights live. Let us never forget the
brave souls that were lost on the those flights and let us be inspired
to stand upon their shoulders to reach yet new heights. We cannot
let the United States of America’s manned space flight capability
end here. I was so inspired by the Space Shuttle program that I
designed and built the BlastOff! Bed to inspire my own son when
he was ready to leave the confines of his crib for his own life
adventure and as a tribute to the incredible achievement of all
those involved in the Space Shuttle program. Perhaps one of the
children who grows up inspired in a BlastOff! Bed might turn out
to be the first to walk on Mars.
The NASA space shuttle fleet consists of the now retired shuttles
Enterprise, Columbia, Challenger, Discovery, Atlantis and Endavour.
What name will you give your child’s BlastOff! Bed?
We were thrilled to have the BlastOff! Space
Shuttle Bed featured on Look What I Did!,
Episode #HLWID-106, which aired over a dozen times on HGTV.

I designed the original BlastOff! Bed in auto·des·sys
form·Z on the Mac and printed a set of construction plans,
which are available on the BlastOff! Special Edition
DVD along with high resolution photos of the finished bed as
well as construction photos & video.

I built the
bed in my garage out of 3/4" plywood panels that I cut
with a saber saw. I rounded all the exposed plywood edges
with a router to make them kid friendly. I attached the plywood
panels
to a sturdy wood frame made of 2x4’s and 2x6’s
which also supported a standard metal twin mattress frame.
I then disassembled the components and reassembled the bed
again
in MJ’s
bedroom. Overall dimensions are approximately 7.5'
x 9' though it could be made smaller to fit a smaller
room.
To the right you can see a time-lapse video I shot during
the assembly phase. This video was used in a segment about
the bed on HGTV’s Look What I Did! and
served as the inspiration for the award-winning
3D animated short film, BlastOff! |

and print. The construction guide is on the DVD-ROM portion of
the DVD, which is accessible when the DVD is inserted into a computer’s
DVD-ROM drive. Mac users simply click on the the BlastOff!
Bed Construction Guide.pdf file after inserting the
DVD into your Mac. Windows users may need to quit the DVD player
that Windows automatically

your dimensions to match your specific mattress frame by using
the grid on the plans as a measurment guide and then adjusting
the measurements to your actual mattress frame dimensions and needs.
