“Happy with professional service and willingness to work together to produce a beautiful product.”

– Abie Mendelsohn M.D., F.A.C.S.,
Director, Head & Neck Robotic Surgery Program
David Geffen School of Medicine – UCLA

UCLA’s David Geffen School of Medicine wanted to have a custom anatomical model created for 3D printing that they could use to train throat surgeons. DreamLight had previously created successful 3D medical illustrations and 3D conceptual illustrations for other UCLA medical departments. So when they needed custom 3D modeling for 3D printing they turned to DreamLight again. We created a custom model of the head and shoulders with an open mouth and throat. We worked from existing 3D library content and merged all the necessary models into a single seamless model suitable for 3D printing. During the process we worked through a number of different versions of the model as their 3D printing specifications were progressively refined.

High Resolution Still Renders from 3D Animation

In order to show a sample of the 3D model we created for 3D printing we put the model into a sample 3D animation as seen above. DreamLight can also render high resolution still images of the animated products and processes that are suitable for print reproduction in addition to other digital uses. This is a great way to leverage a modeling or animation project across a wide variety of marketing materials for an entire campaign including product videos with 3D animation, web graphics, training materials, broadcast TV commercials, print collateral, print advertisements, trade show graphics, billboards and even custom rendered images for use in PowerPoint presentations.

How to Model for 3D Printing with Modo

This behind the scenes tutorial, How to Model for 3D Printing, takes you through this project showing how we leveraged existing 3D content in order to create a fully custom 3D model specifically intended for 3D printing by the client. We go step by step through each stage of the project in The Foundry’s Modo.
